1950s
The Early Days
  • 1951 – IKO is founded in Calgary, Alberta by Isidore Koschitzky.
  • 1954 – Shingle production begins in Calgary.
  • 1958 – Rolled roofing and shingle production begins in Eastern Canada at the newly built Brampton, Ontario plant.

1960s, 1970s
Leading the Industry in Vertical Integration
  • 1960 – IKO becomes the first shingle manufacturer to process its own asphalt on site.
  • 1976 – IKO begins production of laminated, two-layer asphalt shingles.
  • 1976 – IKO begins printing its own shingle packaging wrappers.
  • 1972 – The company expands to Europe by building a plant in Ham, Belgium.

1980s
Building Our Modern Foundation
  • 1980 – IKO opens its first factory in the US with the purchase of its Wilmington, Delaware facility.
  • 1988 – IKO begins construction of its first plant to quarry, crush, and color its own roofing granules in Madoc, Ontario.

1990s, 2000s
Strengthening 
Our Foothold
  • 1995 – IKO opens its first fully built US plant in Sumas, Washington, also launching its first four-wide shingle laminator.
  • 1997 – IKO develops one of the first polymer-modified asphalt shingles to meet Class 4 impact resistance.
  • 1999 – IKO opens its first fully built U.S. plant in Sumas, WA, featuring its first four-wide laminator and a modified bitumen line.
  • 2001 – IKO partners with industry associates to build a glass fiber processing plant in Danville, Illinois (Fiberteq) and a glass mat manufacturing plant in Clarksville, Tennessee in 2005, producing the widest glass mat sheet in the industry.

2010s, 2020s
Delivering on Performance
  • 2010s – IKO innovates advanced ArmourZone® technology for extreme nail pull-through resistance.
  • 2015 – IKO’s Performance shingles launch, including Dynasty with Armourzone and Nordic with Class 4 impact resistance.
  • 2021 – IKO begins production of Innovi™ TPO from its newly built plant in Hagerstown, Maryland, expanding IKO roofing products into the single-ply roofing market.
  • 2023 – IKO’s first Asphalt Shingle Recycling line is commissioned at the Hawkesbury, Ontario plant.
  • 2024 – Brantford, Ontario is announced as the site of IKO’s first expanded polystyrene foam insulation plant.
